The Sport Pilot Rating
The Sport pilot Certificate is available specifically for pilots of light-sport aircraft (LSA). Basically an LSA is a small, simple to operate, airplane. The light-sport airplane is usually smaller and slower than other light airplanes. They have fixed landing gear, fixed pitch props, and can carry a maximum of 2 people. They are flown in daylight hours. They can be flown anywhere in the United States, but usually not Internationally. A sport pilot certificate and LSA's are a good way for sport pilots to fly at less cost.
FAA requirements to obtain a Sport Pilot Certificate
1. Be at least 17 years of age (when you finish your training and take your FAA Practical Test.)
2. Be able to read, speak, write, and converse fluently in English.
3. Obtain a drivers license and have never had a FAA medical certificate denied or revoked.
4. Pass the 40 question pilot knowledge test with a score of 70% or better.
5. Receive a minimum of 20 hours of flight training, including a minimum of 5 hrs solo time.
6. Successfully complete a FAA Practical Flight Test.
After receiving your Sport Pilot Rating, you can take a passenger up with you. With additional training you can fly into class B, C, and D airspace. You are limited to daytime flying and not able to go above 10,000 ft. You must be able to see the ground at all times.
This is a great option for someone who wants to enjoy the fun of flying without all the expense and hassles. If you think you can not pass a medical certificate examination, but have a valid driver's license this is the rating that can keep you in the air.
