| The Early Years |
My KR2 was purchased as a partially completed project during the 2004 KR2
Gathering. It was originally started in the 1980s. The plane had
been damaged when a roll of carpet fell onto the tail section. Much of the
finishing was rough, and the 1835cc VW engine needed to be upgraded.
The person I bought plane from had disassembled the instrument panel, and the canopy had been broken. There was also damage to the fuselage bottom. The Volkswagen engine was replaced with a Corvair engine, the firewall replaced and strengthened, new motor mount, installed. I also added new fixed gear, new front and rear decks, new fuel and electrical system, and tanks. The old finish was removed and new finish applied. The plane put me much further along toward flying, and it came in a covered trailer to transport the plane. The instrument panel will have traditional steam gauges to be IFR certified, but will also contain an Approach Systems Moving Map GPS EFIS with satellite weather. The plane will be IFR capable, but will not be flown in "hard IFR" weather. The tail fin has a camera mounted looking forward. It will provide video while flying as well as help during ground operations. The plane will be capable of doing positive G acrobatics. It will be thoroughly tested and flown first, then placed back into Phase 1 testing for the acrobatic maneuvers. I owe much to Bill Clapp and William Wynne who have given me places to work, technical assistance, and encouragement. My plane would not be as far along as it is if it were not for them.
