Flying into Panama

Advance permission is required.  Expect to get permission about five days before departure no matter how soon you send your request in.

Aircraft requirements:  1. Proof of liability insurance.  2. Aircraft registration.  3. Airworthiness certification

 I.C.A.O airport identification: MPxx

The following airports are International:

Panama City (MPTO)  For the scheduled airlines.  They are really not set up for private aircraft

Panama City “Gelabert”  (MPMG)  The downtown airport for Panama City.  This is for private aircraft and air taxis.  It was Alstead military base located in the Canal Zone until the US gave the Zone (with all the improvements) back to Panama.  It replaces Paltilla which was closed several years ago.  However, the identifier MPMG for Paltilla was carried over to Gelabert.  Confused?  Just set up to do a final down the canal past the Bridge of Americas.  Just when you pass the bridge, look to your right and land.  (it comes up quick)  And, there is a restricted area out on the point of old Panama.  Approach will not let you near it nor will they tell you what it is but I can.  It is the home of the President of Panama.

Bocas Del Toro  (MPBO)  Long paved strip on the northeast corner of Panama.  Quick and easy, all services are at the airport.  If you arrive between commercial flights, you might have to go to town to find the immigration person.  Can’t find him, you can get your stamp the next day (or the day after)  Definitely a laid-back entry.

Changuinola  (MPCH)  On the mainland just across from Bocas.  It is there for the commercial shipment of bananas out of the country.  Really high tower, big terminal, and no one there.  Only person that I could find when I was there was in the tower. (a long, long way up)

David  (MPDA)  Nothing but bad reports from people that clear through here.  Understand that when they are through with your inspection, you will need some time to put your aircraft back together.

Puerto Armuelles  (MPPC)  Never stopped there however, when flying over, looks like a sleepy little airport with little going on.
