Sapona
The Sapona was built during WWI and later owned by Miami Beach developer and Indy 500 founder Carl Fisher, It was later sold to Bahamian bootlegger Bruce Bethell who used it as a floating warehouse. It was run aground in 1926. Bethell, a one armed man, once fell off the ship and spent three days in the sea before being rescued. A notorious rum-runner he also owned the Fountain of Youth bar in Bimini which would later become the Big Game Fishing Club. Bruce Bethell died insane and penniless in 1950.
The Sapona would be used for target practice by the US Air Force during WWII.
The 300 ft Sapona wreck lies close to shore in 15 feet of water, just 75 yards from the Gulf Stream drop-off. The cement hulled ship ran aground in the shallows during a hurricane. It is home to many fish including puffer fish, grunt and snapper, stingrays and sergeant fish.
