Androsia Batik Factory
The Birch family of Small Hope Bay Lodge
opened Androsia Textiles in 1973. The craft was an attempt to help the
local community while producing something unique to Andros. The fabric is
created with the ancient hot wax method where designs are stamped on white
fabric using wax. The fabric is then dyed and hung out to dry in the sun.
The fabric is sold as bolts of cloth, as well
as finished clothing. The scraps are given to local weavers and used as
trim on many baskets and straw items made in the Bahamas.
