Summer 2011 Alaska Trip
This trip was to ferry a Cessna 150
(N7101S) with one of my students, Mark Exeter. The starting point was from
his hanger at
Seamans Field Airport (9N3)
in
Factoryville, just outside of Scranton PA. We
crossed into Canada at Cut Bank Montana (CTB), and cleared Canadian
Customs at Lethbridge. From there we make our way to Edmonton worked our way
to Dawson Creek, up the Alcan Highway through Pink Mountain and on to Watson
Lake. From there we flew over Swift River to
Whitehorse. From Whitehorse we make our way to Haines Junction to refuel.
We overflew Beaver Creek crossing into Alaska, clearing Customs
at Northway Junction From Northway Junction we followed the highway to Delta Junction,
then on to Fairbanks International Airport. The next day we flew to Manley
Airport where the plane is based.
The total distance flown was nautical miles. We left on May 29th, and arrived on June . Mark was just starting a three month trip to Alaska and was adjusting to a slower pace. We only flew in good weather, and we did not plan on long hours in any one day. We had one day we didn't fly because of the weather, and several days we quit flying early. We also spent time enjoying the the towns along the way.
Once we arrived in Manley, we did flights to the local airports to help Mark flying in the mountains.
We both took one small bag of clothes, The lightest survival equipment available, and adjusted the fuel as necessary to stay under gross weight. Because of this we flew shorter legs. The Flight Log lists the path we flew.
Mark's account of the trip is posted here without editorial comment.
