September 18 - 20, 2009 KR Gathering
I arrived at KMVN airport Friday night around 6PM. I missed the first part of The Gathering due to work.
The start of The Gathering was marred by two crashes. N4DD crashed on landing. N4207Z had the engine quit and he went down just short of the runway. He hit a ditch and totaled his plane. Both pilots were injured and taken to the hospital, but will be ok. KMVN has a air ambulance helicopter on the field which is active 24 hours a day. It heard the second pilot call the airport and was in the air tracking the plane when it touched down.
This is the first year I camped at the airport. I set up my tent before it got dark. It was great getting to see all my friends at the campsite. There was the usual activity on the flightline.
Several Technical Forums were offered during the event. I attended the one Mark Langford spoke at about engines and fifth bearings. Some of the fifth bearings were displayed at the gathering.
The KR Banquet Saturday night was well attended as usual. There as the usual good food. The Mayor of Mount Vernon, and Chris, the Airport Manager welcomed us. The awards were presented.
On a vote of 37 to 24 it was decided to move The 2010 Gathering to I39 outside of Richmond, Kentucky. It will be hosted by Dana Overall. He is seeking input from the KR Community, and information will be sent via the KR Net.
